She began writing late, and enjoyed immediate success. While that inheritance can be traced in her novels, what stands out more is the changing, often abrasive, interplay between generations, between Chinese mothers and their American daughters. Her own life, and that of her mother and grandmother in pre-revolutionary China, has been dogged with astonishing drama, tragedy and violence.
